Postmortem

This project was actually quite fun to work on for me, despite the time crunch! I really wish I had more time to work on it, though i might as well if i find the time in the future. With the limited time and knowledge I had, I believe I didn't do such a bad job with this game. I had my struggles for sure too though. The time limit made me struggle quite a bit, and since I also had other assignments to take care of too, it was tough to get things done on time. Another struggle was that I really wanted to polish this game as much as I could, especially with the self made assets. This delayed everything quite a bit for me as well.

Despite all that, I think I am happy with what I was able to do with the time I had. I never got to finish a full game like this before, and all my experiments only had a couple basic mechanics and not much more to them. I am also quite happy with how my assets turned out!

I believe my biggest mistake through this whole process was that I did not do enough in the first week. I was struggling a lot to come up with ideas for what kind of game I wanted to do, and with me being a little behind on other assignments, I didn't manage to get as much done with my game as I had wished. I am hoping that next time I can get on track a little quicker!

There were a couple things I really wanted to implement into my game but had no time for, so I might work on that in the future when I am able to. Some of the things I tried to do were unfortunately quite the waste of time too.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make the camera follow both of the characters in the game and also zoom in and out to show both characters all the time. Nothing I tried worked properly and I could barely find any tutorials online so it was pretty tough. After trying for a couple hours, I ended up scrapping that idea and regretted the time I had wasted on that. This happened to me with a couple other smaller things, where I wasted a lot of time trying to figure something out that just did not work.

The pressure plate system in my game was a similar case, though luckily that turned out to work just fine! Surprisingly I could not find any tutorials on how to get that mechanic down right, where a platform would move once a character steps on a pressure plate. It was very difficult trying to figure that all out on my own, and I decided to ask my professor for help with it the next day. To my surprise though, that day I had the idea to use a system from a basic godot tutorial that is completely unrelated to what I was trying to do, however seems to have a similar logic when you think about it. And it actually worked! That was a very fulfilling feeling for me, especially since i don't really know how to code. I am very glad I was able to figure out such a crucial mechanic for my game, kind of by myself!

I also really wanted to implement sound effects and music but did not have any time. In the future I would love to play around with that too.

Overall, I am happy with what I was able to create, though I do hope to add more to this game in the future!
