Week 1 Progress

Ham and Dog - Week 1 - Progress

The first week I spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas on what kind of puzzle game I could make within 2 weeks. I am not too familiar with coding, so anything extremely unique or complicated would've been out of the question for me. After playing a couple puzzle platformers on itch.io, and thinking back on games I used to play as a child, I settled for a game which would be heavily inspired by Fireboy and Watergirl. I believed that having a clear reference for my game would make things much easier for me, especially as a beginner in coding. I also knew that Fireboy and Watergirl generally does not have complex mechanics, and I have experimented with similar mechanics in Godot in the past, which made this experience a lot less scary than i initially thought it would be.

Once I decided on a general concept, I started to add my own unique elements to the game. I wanted to make a silly and cute game this time around, so I decided to make the playable characters a dog and a hamster. I thought the idea of the two being friends and trying to get home together was really cute.

I then started to sketch out some concepts for my game in my notebook; character designs, level designs, pickup and environment designs, etc... I wanted to get to a point where I was pretty confident in what I want the end result to look like. After several sketches, I decided on the overall ideas I wanted to see all over my game.

I had to do a lot of research and revisit tutorials i have seen before, to prepare myself for this game. I looked up many godot tutorials until I felt ready to start actually making my game.
